Abstract

In the past sixty years thinking about (sustainable) development has been prone to some intense intellectual and

practical turmoil. Especially in the first forty years, thereby, markets and firms were seen rather as part of the development problem than as part of its solution. Since the start of the 21st century however, awareness has grown that the complexity of the world’s sustainability and development problems, asks for joint approaches.

Increasingly, partnerships between firms, governmental institutions and civil society organizations are formed to tackle issues which cannot be solved by one organization alone. Cross-sector partnerships are said to provide effective and innovative solutions to problems through pooling of resources; generating knowledge and capacity development. The widely held expectation is that cross-sector partnerships provide both organizational benefits to their member organizations and create synergy to achieve effective outcomes for society. In a recent evaluation study with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the PrC hasgenerated lessons on the effectiveness of business-led partnerships in Colombia in order to understand the drivers of partnership success especially in a conflict-ridden environment. These findings provide insights for academic research on the effectiveness of cross-sector partnerships for sustainable development.

The joint researchers’ seminar will address the following topics:

  1. Insights into research on cross-sector partnerships: partnership portfolio management.
  2. Inclusive business models: can multinational enterprises contribute to poverty alleviation?
  3. Colombian researchers’ agenda on international business and cross-sector partnerships
  4. Discussion: how to cooperate and proceed in scientific research on international business and cross-sector partnerships for sustainable development
